Protest against president again features nearly all-white upper-middle class displays of racism, desire to protect status and putting ‘have nots’ back in their place

brazilian protest of the rich.jpgNote from BW of Brazil: Once again, another protest and once again Brazil shows how divided it is really is along lines of race and class. Just for the sake of context, if you haven’t already heard from your favorite mainstream news source, millions of Brazilians took to the streets on Sunday in another display of self-serving outrage involving the severe economic crisis that has gripped the country for the past year, corruption charges dealing with the so-called ‘Lava Jato’ scandal and calls for the end of 14 years of the PT (Workers’ Party) rule. But was this all that was at play or were there some other issues that people won’t openly admit?

Sometimes it’s very revealing…

Cuba Responds to US Criticism on HHRR

March 16, 2016

NYC Havana Blog

Cuba replied here today to accusations made by the US representative, who criticized the Island during a general debate of the 31st ordinary period of sessions of the UN Human Rights Council.

In his reply, the Cuban delegate Pablo Berti urged the US Government to better pay attention and respond to the human rights violations that are committed every day against its own people.

A press release issued by the Cuban Permanent Mission in Geneva says that Berti also urged Washington to return to Cuba the territory illegally occupied by the US Naval Base of Guantanamo, which has a Detention Center where people are tortured and held in a legal limbo.

The Cuban diplomat also urged the United States to allow the HRC Special Rapporteur on Torture to visit that prison without restrictions.

Berti reiterated that Cuba won’t stop demanding the end of the US economic, commercial and financial…

Treasury and Commerce Announce Significant Amendments to the Cuba Sanctions Regulations ahead of President Obama’s Historic Trip to Cuba

March 15, 2016

NYC Havana Blog

Today, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced significant amendments to the Cuban Assets Control Regulations (CACR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR).  These changes, coupled with the arrangement recently announced by the Departments of State and Transportation allowing scheduled air service between the United States and Cuba, will significantly increase the ability of U.S.  citizens to travel to Cuba to directly engage with the Cuban people.  Additionally, these regulations expand Cuba and Cuban nationals’ access to U.S. financial institutions and the U.S. dollar from Cuba, and will expand the ability for Cubans legally present in the United States to earn stipends and salaries beyond living expenses.  These amendments further the new direction toward Cuba that President Obama laid out in December 2014.  The changes are outlined below and will take effect on March 16…

jose ramon balaguer.jpgCuba will never renounce socialism, said the head of the International Relations of Cuba´s Communist Party, Jose Ramon Balaguer, during a conference Thursday in Mexico.

Socialism is the only alternative for the Cuban Revolution, said the political leader as he opened the 20th International Conference Political Parties and a New Society, organized by Mexico´s Workers Party.

Balaguer said that the 7th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party, to be held in April, will draw the route of Cuban socialism and the social and economic development program up to the year 2030.

Economic blockade still in tact

191 - 2As to Cuba-US relations, Balaguer said that Washington´s economic blockade of Cuba is intact, despite the reestablishment of diplomatic links.  He added that the Cuban people are calling for the return to the island of the illegally occupied territory of Guantanamo by a US naval base…

President Barack Obama’s visit to Cuba

Cuba reaffirms its will to advance in relations with the United States, on the basis of respect for the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and the principles of the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace

by Granma |

The President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, will make an official visit to Cuban this coming March 20-22.

This will be the second time a U.S. President comes to our archipelago. Previously having done so was Calvin Coolidge, who landed in Havana in January of 1928. He arrived aboard a warship to attend the 6th Pan American Conference, which was held at that time under the sponsorship of a local figure recalled as infamous, Gerardo Machado.

U.S. blockade sees British Cuba Solidarity Campaign bank accounts close

March 5, 2016

NYC Havana Blog

There are many examples of the extraterritorial character of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for over half a century. The cases range from multi-million dollar fines against banks or companies for doing business with Cuba, to the refusal to provide services to persons or entities that have some link with the island.

A clear example of this policy is the closure of the bank accounts of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) in the UK, following the takeover of the Co-op Bank by U.S.-based hedge funds.

Other organizations with links that could be considered contrary to United States foreign policy interests, such as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, have also faced account closures since the Co-op Bank was bailed out by the U.S. funds.

Cuba Rejects Politicization of Human Rights Issue

March 4, 2016

NYC Havana Blog

The Caribbean state was referring specifically to remarks by Deputy U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the United Nations Human Rights Council, accusing a group of countries — among them Cuba, Venezuela, China and Russia — of alleged human rights violations.

A statement issued by the Cuban Foreign Ministry reads: “The United Nations Human Rights Council should not follow in the steps of the once-discredited Commission on Human Rights, which the United States and its Western allies turned into a mere political tool to advance their own interests to the detriment of Third World countries and peoples.”

Also addressing the high-level segment meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Pedro Núñez, Director of Multi-Lateral Affairs and International Law at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, pointed to rich countries like the United States trying to impose their own vision of democracy and governance on the rest of the world, and…
