Leading women lawyers speak out for the Five

Internationally respected women from the legal world are adding their voices to the International Commission on the Cuban Five taking place in London on 7 and 8 March 2014

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, one of the top lawyers in Britain, is the latest to endorse the Commission. She says:

“I am happy to endorse the International Commission of Inquiry into the case of the Miami Five. My old friend Leonard Weinglass was their attorney and another friend, Martin Garbus, is now acting on their behalf.”

She joins retired judge in the Wayne County Circuit Court in the US, Claudia House Morcom, Vanessa Ramos, Continental President of the American Association of Jurists, and celebrated British human rights lawyer Louise Christian, who have all also endorsed the Commission.

Many others are adding their voices through the Voices for the Five website – http://www.voicesforthefive.com/upload/ Among them is Urszula Masny-Latos, who is director of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, a bastion of the defence of civil liberties. She says:

“We can learn a lot about the American ‘justice’ system from the way the Cuban Five have been treated.”

The Commission will take place on International Women’s day 2014, adding poignancy to the presence at it of wives and family members of the Five, who will travel to London as part of a high profile delegation from Cuba to take part in the event.
